Spring clean your smile

Spring is on its way! This is normally the time we all look to deep clean our homes, get rid of clutter and start looking towards the summer. But what about your smile? In this blog, we have some top tips to get your smile ready for spring.

Begin at home

During the long winter months, it is easy for your oral hygiene to slip. You should be aiming to brush your teeth twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste. It is also important to remember that it is better to spit that rinse after brushing your teeth. This will ensure the fluoride stays in your mouth for as long as possible. You should also use interdental cleaning aids to brush in between your teeth where brushing misses. For this you can use floss, tape, interdental brushes or floss picks.

Food and Drink

To keep your teeth white and bright, try to avoid dark foods and eat crunchy vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, celery and apples as these foods actively help to clean and protect your teeth. Remember anything that can stain a white t-shirt will stain your teeth. It is also important to remember that a diet high in natural sugars and acids can also have an impact on your smile.

In spring and summer, make the most of strawberry season. Strawberries are not only a great source of antioxidants which is great for skin, they’re renowned for keeping teeth whiter because they contain malic acid, an enzyme that encourages saliva production, so you naturally rinse your mouth as you eat.

Dental hygienist and dentist

Regular appointments with your dentist and hygienist help to remove plaque and calculus which builds up over time and if left can lead to gum disease and tooth decay. By removing stains the dentist and hygienist can give you a brighter, whiter smile. Here at College Dental Surgeries we believe that prevention is always better that cure. We can offer advice and tips on how your diet and lifestyle might be affecting your oral health, as well as a range of preventative treatments.
